Big 4 Sports at Pioneer Day and Nine Days to Olympics

With a resurgent Big Four tractor providing motivation, the Pioneer Day celebration crowned many champions last Saturday, including the other Big Four: softball, basketball, golf, and running.

In a last hurrah for long time player, manager, and sponsor, Randee Bayles of Bayles Exploration, loyal ball players rallied for a final Blue Mountain Invitational Fast Pitch Softball Tournament win.

Bayles, whose teams have won 15 of the approximately 30 BMS tournaments, expressed before the tournament this would be his last effort.  And after finishing second the last four years, the boys of Bayles skipped to the 14-team tourney title undefeated, triumphing over Gore Construction in the championship game.

In the drop-down tournament, two Monticello teams vied for the consolation honor with Daron coming out on top over LaBroc.

3-on-3 basketball
A Monticello High School alumini team consisting of Ian Burtenshaw, Scott Frost, and Tony Pehrson, bested all rivals in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Adam Black, Terek Esplin, Jake Duncan, and Rylan Goodwine were the best school-age group, while Team Freestone – Matt Freestone, Eli Johnson, and Andrew Torres – won the elementary division.

A golfing dozen
Over 150 attempts were made in the closest to the pin contest on the number three hole at the Hideout.  No one got closer than 12 year old Tanner Eardley, who used a seven iron from the white tees to get within 15 and a half feet.

Eating Loyd’s dust
Jeff Hunt reports a highly successful Blue Mountain 5K race.  He reports, “It looks like Macee Nielson gave a high school cross-country preview this year as she won the 5K with a time of 19:16.

“The next closest time was the male winner, Daniel Washington of Athens, GA, with a time of 19:45.  There were 80 runners and walkers in the 5K, with 16 kids in the kid’s race.

“We had runners from as far away as New York, Indiana, Georgia and Las Vegas.  Tyler Bird and Sara Musselman were the winners of the kid’s race.  Even the Cave Guy and his too-kind-and-loving wife got in on the action, both winning their age group.  I won’t tell you what group that was, we will just say it was in the higher numbers.”

13 & Under: Brandon Ramsey & Kayla MacArthur.

Under 20: Daniel Washington & Macee Nielson.

20-29: Micah Burleson & Annie Green.

30-39: Scott Wilmont & Aleigh Redd.

Stone age: Gary Torres & Deidree Torres.

50 & Over: Joe Peterson & Becky Peterson.

I see heaps of people out running, jogging, or walking every morning in Monticello and Blanding trying to get or stay in some semblance of shape.

Thinking about the Olympics are you?  What does an elite athlete, such as Lindsey Anderson, a member of the 2008 US Olympic team, do?

In part 2 of the Lindsey Chronicles, discover what it takes to be an elite athlete.  Try comparing your training schedule with hers.

Q.  So Lindsey, what is your training schedule?

During my regular training weeks, I’m running somewhere around 80-85 miles per week.  I do two or three hard workouts each week, usually on Tuesday, Thursday and sometimes Saturday.

These hard workouts are when I do my interval training, tempo runs, power runs, intervals with hurdles, etc.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I’ll do distance runs of 60 minutes and afterwards I’ll do speed drills, stairs, and strides.  Saturdays are my long run days when I’ll go for 90 minutes. Depending on the week, I may or may not do a tempo run in the middle of it (that’s where the third hard workout would come from).

Besides my interval workouts and distance runs, I also do 30 minute morning runs five days a week.  So in sports terms I’m doing five two-a-days each week.

I only run once on Saturday, when I have my long runs. I take Sunday’s completely off.  (My day of rest!  I definitely look forward to this day!)

I also lift weights twice a week and do a different ab workout/routine every day. As for recovery, I get ice baths (water is around 42-50°) 4-5 times per week.  They are hard to get in at first, but really help in recovery.

And I see a sport specific massage therapist usually once per week to help keep my body injury-free and it also helps a ton with recovery.  With all of this I usually average around 4 hours per day doing all this stuff!

Q. Who are your sponsors. How does that work?

I’m sponsored by Nike.  I have a shoe contract with them, which means that they give me all my running equipment: shoes, clothes, watches, sunglasses, etc. I also have a travel budget and I’m on a salary from which I get paid quarterly.  Nothing like Tiger Woods or anything, but it definitely helps!

Q. In your initial orientation about China, what were some of the interesting things you learned about the culture and does and don’ts?

Basically I just remember that they are very respectful of the elderly and you don’t say their first name when they introduce themselves. Call them by their last name, not their first unless you are really good friends.  When you order at a restaurant it’s ok to point to someone else’s dish to let them know you want.  I guess a lot of Chinese people order this way.

Q. Any sight-seeing adventures while in China?

I really want to see the Great Wall!  I don’t know how much I’ll be able to see before my race(s), but I’ll have a few days afterwards to see some things.  I also would love to go to some of the other sports events if possible!

Q. Any heads-up on the US opening ceremony outfits?

They haven’t shown us anything.  Our uniforms are mostly dark blue except the lettering.

Q. Remember those berets from the SLC Olympics?

I’d actually forgotten about those!  I kinda hope we won’t have to wear them!

Evil Easter IV Trailer

Trailer for the slasher film EVIL EASTER IV. This is a faux trailer for a grindhouse style slasher romp, in pure 70s/80s fashion. My girlfriend and I made this using a Panasonic digital camera that records short, silent video images. It stars only us, and was made to be featured in the upcoming real film BLOOD VOWS, which I wrote the script for. (bloodvows.com) EVIL EASTER is my directorial debut, and is all in good fun. This is a tribute to the drive-in flicks of my youth which began my lifelong obsession with horror movies.

Penny Stock Trading Style

I have been through many different styles of full time penny stock daytrading. I have finally found one that produces gains on a daily basis. All my old trading styles produced about 50% – 60% winners, but my losses is what held me back from making a consistant weekly gain.

My new style has to do with OTCCHARTS and NEWS.

1. In the morning, open your “news and filings” section in OTCCHARTS. Click on news. (The filings don’t seem to produce many runners)

2. Disreguard all the stocks that are picks by Subway, Hotstocks to watch, or Market Alerts.

3. Put all the stocks that have NEWS into your OTCCHARTS personal watchlist.

4. Click on trades in your personal watchlist. This will bring the stocks with the most trades to the top

5. When the bell sounds, watch the stocks at the top of your watchlist with the most trades. Today, there were only 3 that really had a lot of trading volume right off the bat. Those three were ABXA, NHLC, and XKEM.

6. After about 2 or 3 minutes you will have your plays for the morning. There is only one thing to check before getting into a trade. You have to look at the BID and ASK to see if they are moving north. For example:

ABXA opened at 5.70 X 5.75. Within 2 minutes it went to 5.75 X 5.80. THATS A PLAY

NHLC opened at 12.25 X 12.50. Within 1 minute it was at 12.50 X 12.75. THATS A PLAY

XKEM opened at .045 X .047. Within 2 minutes it went to .045 X .046. THIS IS NOT A PLAY

7. Entry strategy. Do not try to get in these at the ASK price. It won’t work most of the time because they are running to fast. I decided to get into ABXA about 2 minutes into today. BID and ASK were at 5.80 and 5.85. I put my order in for 6.00 to make sure it fills. It filled at 5.90. I have missed many runs trying to put my buy in at the ASK price and then chasing it up 20%.

8. Exit strategy. It’s up to you. Some have 1 run, some have 2 runs, a lot have three runs like todays ABXA and NHLC. Sell when you feel comfortable. Don’t get greedy everytime waiting for that third run.

Xerox room hijinks

I love the 20th century. We had such fun with the technology. It left some cold, however, and got to be a bit too much to deal with. Then there was the matter of the egotistical, chauvinistic pig bosses who pushed some employees to the edge with their tragic 1980s ways. Anyways, it’s kind of amusing to watch a Xerox room disaster.

Doctor Who Matt Smith 80s Retro Intro

Ok, so some of us have our doubts about the 26-year old Matt Smith taking over as the The Doctor, but the more I thought about it, the more I began to think that this is probably what people were saying when Davison was about to replace Baker. On a whim, I decided to do a 80s style intro for Matt Smith. This one actually turned out better than my Tennant 80s intro, because I’ve done this four different times now (the third is a short “starfield” test I did with David Morrisey that was never finished. I’ll upload what I have. Anywho, this one I think turned out better because I tried a few different techniques. I actually spent less time on this one….considerably. This one took me about 12 to 14 hours total to do. I spent weeks on the Tennant intro.

What Graphic Card is the Best for Me?

Dedicated graphics cards, which we will be discussing in this guide, are needed if you want to do 3D gaming or watch high definition movies (even though it may sometimes suffice with a powerful CPU and lot’s of internal RAM) Important Specifications to Consider When Choosing a Graphics Card

GPU

GPU stands for “Graphic Processing Unit” and is the main controlling circuit on every graphics card. The GPU is the most determinant feature of every graphics card when it comes to the overall performance and speed. The two biggest manufacturers of GPUs are NVIDIA and ATI (which is owned by CPU manufacturer AMD). They do the reference designs for each new generation of graphics card. But most graphics cards are sold by other manufacturers who produce their own flavour of the reference cards from NVIDIA and ATI. Examples of those manufacturers are MSI, Asus, ECS Elitegroup, XFX and more. Examples of recent generations of graphic GPUs from NVIDIA are; GeForce 8500/8600/8800/9800 GT/GTX/GX2 and GTX 260/280. ATIs latest generations of graphics cards are: RADEON HD 3850/4850/4870 in different versions.

RAM

It is also important to consider the amount and type of the onboard RAM of the graphics card, which is a different thing than the RAM of your computer. The RAM is important for a number of technical reasons we will not go into further here. But in short you should go for a graphics card with at least 256MB of RAM. The type of RAM is less important, but we recommend that you buy a graphics card with the second or later generation of GDDR (GDDR2 or later).

Different Slot Types

There are three different slots available on the PC market. The “slot” is where you connect the graphics card on the mainboard of your computer. You must verify which type of slot your mainboard has before purchasing a graphic card, or you may waste money on something you cannot use. The available slots are PCI (very old), AGP (old) or PCI express (today’s standard). All fairly recent bought computers are outfitted with a PCI Express slot, but be sure to check it. PCI express is the newest technology and allows the largest bandwidth which means better performance for you.

External Connectors

The connecters on the graphics cards are also important. Standard analog VGA connectors have been replaced by DVI (digital) connectors. The DVI connector is a must, some cards even come with two DVI connectors which will allow you to connect an extra display. Additional external connectors to look for are: •HDMI, which will enable you to connect your computer to a plasma or LCD-TV. (This can also be done through a DVI connector with a DVI/HDMI converter) •S-Video outputs are used to connect the PC to an older style VCR or TV and allow outputting the same display as present on your screen. •DB-15/VGS/SVGA connectors are basically utilized for a standard output to an analog monitor. Good if you have an old monitor.

Considering your budget

Of course, you financial possibilities will limit your purchase options too. Let’s take a look of what you can expect depending on how much you want or can afford. Remember that graphics cards are products with short cycles so suggestions below are only guide lines.

Low budget graphic cards

We are talking about spending $50 to $80, what can you expect? In this lower budget level the most popular and valuable GPUs from ATI and NVIDIA are the ATI Radeon HD 3650 and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 and 8600GT/GTS. These cards typically carry a RAM of 256MB-512MB depending on model and manufacturer. There are no problems to find cards with multiple DVI connectors and some even carry a HDMI connector. These types of cards are suitable for silent HTPCs and media centres since you can get them with silent passive coolers. We cannot recommend the entry level graphics cards for hardcore gaming rigs, even though they will play some older games with no sweat.

Medium priced graphic cards

In this segment, with prices from $80 to $250, you will find graphics cards with good performance even for gaming. You should be aware, because as we said, this is a fast moving market and you can sometimes find real bargains on the current generation of graphics cards when the next generation cards are introduced to the market. Prices drops fast when retailers and e-tailers have to make place in their stock for the new generation of cards. As always we recommend you to read expert reviews of graphics cards to find which the leading expert editors have recommended. Also based on the reviews, try to find out which is the last generation of GPU for the time being. Right now the last generation high end GPU from NVIDIA is the GTX 280. We couldn’t find a 280 GTX card below $250, but we did find one for $260 so the prices are dropping. We recommend you to go with the next to last generation cards like the GeForce 9800GTX or 9800GX2 (dual onboard GPU) and the ATI HD 3850 and 4870. They will offer you a great performance/price ratio.

Advanced graphic cards

Obtaining maximal performance and resolution may lead you to spend $400 and above on a high end graphics cards. This is for real gamers who need that extra FPS rate and resolution to perform optimally. You should look for dual GPU solutions, either onboard dual GPUs or using SLI or Crossfire technology (two physically separated graphics cards working together). The 3870 X2 with 1GB RAM from ATI is a good alternative and is somewhat cheaper than the 4870 X2 which naturally gives some extra percents of performance. From NVIDIA you should take a look at the GTX 280 and 9800GX2.

Start by setting clear points of what you want, need and can afford. Read Expert reviews of graphic cards, it’s the best way to obtain knowledge. Do not hesitate to ask around in hardare forums, people are generally happy to give you advice. Good Luck

80′s T-Shirts – 5 Great Examples Of Video Game Geek T-Shirts From The Eighties

One of the most popular types of 80′s T-shirts are the video game geek T-shirts, which are a nostalgic tribute to old style gaming, a time when the gameplay was far more important than the graphics.

The so called Golden Age of video gaming has inspired numerous geek T-shirts. This was a time during the eighties where there was great technical and design creativity in arcade games. Working within strict limitations of available memory and processor power, the emphasis was on simple and fun gameplay, rather than beautiful looking graphics.

As gameplay was all important, many of these outdated games continue to be popular today despite the limitations in the computing technology. Many games of this era, such as Mario Bros, became so well known that they actually entered popular culture. For example, the release of Pac-Man in 1980 was such a huge hit that it began what is now referred to as “Pac-Mania”. It is these types of games that are now the subject of this sub genre of 80′s T-shirts.

Below are my personal top five favorite geek T-shirts from the eighties, all of which bring back great childhood memories.

Space Invaders T-shirt

Space Invaders was of course one of the early games that started the whole Golden Age of video gaming off. Most of us have played a game of Space Invaders at one time or another and these great looking 80′s T-shirts basically re-enact a game playing out on your chest.

Space Invaders Video Game Funny T-shirt

Staying with the same game, but with a totally different design, this is an awesome looking minimalist tee shirt that features a single white space invader on a black tee shirt.

The Last Supper PacMan Video Game Tee Shirt

These 80′s T-shirts are an hilarious take on the PacMan game. Featuring PacMan and Mr. Ghost who are sitting at a table dining, the image shows that PacMan has just ordered a giant white ball. You can see the sweat dripping off Mr. Ghost’s face, because he realises that once PacMan has eaten his meal he will turn blue and it will indeed be his Last Supper.

Mario Made in the 80s T-shirt

These retro Nintendo T-shirts look really cool and are just perfect for all you Nintendo fan boys out there. The cream shirt has an image of Super Mario jumping next to the following text “Made in the Eighties”, which has been written in a retro font.

Don’t Hate The Player T-shirt

These geek T-shirts are inspired by those early video games that were just impossible to beat. The black tee shirts feature an early joystick with “Don’t hate the player, hate the game” written next to it.

These are the most efficient classes in my opinion. It all depends on your game-play so this can differ from person to person.Modern Warfare and you can always search the site for more useful information about this game.
